2010 will mark a fundamental change for Powderworks.net. Foremost is a change in direction for the site content and focus. For years, Powderworks.net has been a personal website for the owner - Andy. The subject matter of the site has been an evolution of sorts. More about this can be found on the About Us page. However, beginning this year, the focus of Powderworks.net has changed to a tech enthusiast community and with it a complete overhaul of the site from the ground up.
Change in Focus
Powderworks.net is a community of tech geeks. Our goal for this community is mutual aid for ourselves and support for those less tech inclined. With the focus shift to a technology enthusiast community, a new philosophy for the site has emerged:
- Help Others - Lend your expertise to others in search of help in good faith
- Ask for Help - Allow others to help you when you need it
- Promote the Community and Each Other - Give praise to those who deserve it and show others that this resource exists
- Raise awareness of technology and tech issues - Write a review, share a link, and/or talk about your project experiences.
Change in Design
The site now has two distinct sections - Tech News and Blogs and Fun and Games.
The Tech News and Blogs section contains:
- How-tos, reviews, project blogs and links to resources. These range from from PC issues, and website design, general robotics and Maker resources, to resources for those wanting to rewire their house.
- A forum for community conversations, debates, and Q&A
- Up to date tech news feeds from well over 100 news sources on the web with more added regularly
The Fun and Games section contains:
- A full featured arcade with weekly contests, high scores and user stats
- A casino w/ points system and other non arcade games
- A Humor section with jokes and pictures
Other tools and sections:
- Members can also communicate with each other through Private Messages, Live Chat and social network links such as Twitter feeds.
- Members can earn points by participating in various ways on the site
- Members can customize parts of the site such as local weather provided by Weather.com, their profiles and private messaging.
It is our hope that Powderworks.net will grow into an influential resource for geeks of all flavors in the months and years to come. You can help us do this by participating. Answer a question in the forums, write about your projects, add to the growing list of tutorials, and have fun and relax in the fun and games area.
